Women's Retreats in Scotland

Fusing Nature And Hospitality Into A Harmonious Sanctuary

Origins

Rooted in the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands, our story began when Josephine & Dougie returned to Josephine’s Highland roots. Raised in an off-grid community on the west coast of Scotland, Josephine’s unique childhood instilled a profound respect for nature and sustainability. After years of traversing the globe and immersing herself in diverse cultures, Josephine has cultivated a deep understanding of holistic and spiritual practices, which she has diligently honed and incorporated into her life over time.

Vision and Beginnings

Upon acquiring a rundown Croft on the Isle of Skye, a vision emerged: to create a haven of green tourism and holistic wellness. By converting an old agricultural barn alongside our old animal pens into boutique sustainable accommodations marked our initial steps, but our aspirations reached far beyond traditional Highland hospitality. Challenges in the tourism industry sparked Josephine’s introspection. Amidst the COVID pandemic’s toll on people’s well-being, she envisioned holistic wellness programs that harmonised and drew on the healing power of nature within Skye’s natural beauty.

Sustainable Living and Personal Wellbeing

At Suilanu, we recognise the growing need for intentional spaces where people can step away from the pressures of daily life and reconnect with themselves. In a world that moves fast, our vision is to create meaningful retreats and events that restore balance, inspire self-discovery, and support personal well-being.

Guided by a deep respect for nature and holistic practices, we are committed to sustainable living and mindful experiences that align with the rhythms of the land. Our approach blends wellness, community, and Eco-conscious values, offering a sanctuary for those seeking renewal, clarity, and a deeper connection to themselves and the world around them.

Through carefully curated retreats, sound bathing journeys, and holistic,  creative workshops, Suilanu provides a space to pause, reflect, and embrace a more natural state of well-being—one that is rooted in both personal transformation and sustainable living.

Integrating Passions

Dougie is a musician as well as a Skipper, and their combined love of music and culture was rooted in the long-term vision for a program of events, blending wellness, creativity, sustainability, and culture, fostering a holistic business model that honours their own passions, skills, upbringing, and the landscape that surrounds them. With core values rooted in benefiting and enriching visitors well-being combined with the local community’s needs.

SUILANU

SUILANU was born out of our journey and is fuelled by a deep ‘Why’: to blend nature and hospitality into a seamless sanctuary. SUILANU is a name derived from the Gaelic language, literally meaning eye of Anu. Anu is an old Celtic God, which some believe is referenced to the god Danu, the god of the earth and knowledge.

Mission and Offerings

Central to SUILANU’S mission is the promotion of holistic well-being. The business will offer a range of small events, therapies, and retreats that nurture mind, body, and spirit. Drawing on the natural elements Earth, Sea and Sky, through yoga, sound bathing and drum workshops, alongside other holistic practices. Guests are invited to reconnect with themselves and the world around them. In addition to promoting personal wellness, Josephine’s love of textiles and supporting sustainable small businesses is reflected in showcasing and working with local artisans and craftsmen. SUILANU is committed to serving as a platform for showcasing their talents and fostering a sense of community and sustainability.

Commitment to Sustainability

Overall, the vision extends beyond mere sustainability; SUILANU is committed to minimising the business’s environmental footprint while maximising its positive impact on the local area. By creating a series of unique spaces which are designed to harmonise with the natural surroundings, utilising renewable energy sources and eco-friendly materials promoting a healthier way of being and nurturing all who spend time there.

Transformative Actions

Why? Because we believe in the transformative power of small actions. Transforming an old, unused building into an eco barn conversion isn’t just about refurbishment; it’s about showcasing how environmental practices can seamlessly intertwine with top-tier hospitality. By embracing Passivhus and circular economy principles, we’re not only reducing our carbon footprint but also pioneering a new standard for sustainable living in the Scottish Highlands. Through this initiative, we’re not only revitalising a space, that will touch peoples hearts and minds, creating lasting experiences, but also shaping the future of Highland tourism. Offering guests a truly immersive and eco-conscious experience that sets a precedent for responsible travel.
